I’m racking my brain for famous historical or mythological pregnant women. They are hard to find indeed! The virgin Mary is by far number one. No competition. But from there on down, they sharply dwindle in renown.
But there is always the possibility of going as one of Jupiter’s objects of desire, with your male partner [...]

Someone has decided to read the works of 900 Victorian authors and compile them into a companion. Perfect bedtime reading. Just who is this guy? I’m not sure whether to fear or love him for his fanatical energy and focus. Even without having read a page, I respect him for taking up the challenge and [...]

I am about to embark on the greatest creative project I have ever started. It’s bigger than a bustle gown. It’s bigger than an Edwardian corset. And it should last, in total, about nine months.
In an effort to get my homefront ready for this endeavor, there needs to be some organization and furniture relocation. The [...]

Lo, those who believe themselves capable and serious shoppers. Here is a challange! If one wishes to test one’s mettle, try the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, and return humbled!
It’s a veritable wonder of the world, a labyrinth of stalls and shops, tiny passageways, dimly lit rooms, glistening jewels, and forceful characters. Long, roofed passageways or [...]

Yes! Yes! Yes!!! Bring this back, and I might start going swimming again.
http://ideas.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/17/back-to-the-vintage-bathing-costume/?hp
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to go to the beach or pool without having to see too much?! It’s not a modesty issue, its one of politeness and common sense. One can be proud of oneself, one’s body and one’s skin without having to [...]

Rigging Complete

The front panels are sewn to the back panels. The waistband is sewn in but isn’t turned yet. And the rigging – one of my favorite parts – is done.
The skirt is looking pretty all on its own. It needs to be hemmed and trimmed, and will be topped with the plaid polonaise.
I have other [...]

Here is a wonderful link of Ellen Price dancing in La Sylphide with a corset c. 1903.
And a modern La Sylphide, 2004. The same choreographic excerpt starts at 1:49.
I had a costume party this weekend for which I made some muslin Victorian underpinnings. I will be posting those as soon as I can find the [...]

In case you are unfamiliar, Edwin Abbot wrote what was considered by some to be the first Science Fiction Novel, Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, in 1884.
Abbot’s metaphysical novel uses dimensionality and abstract characters to instruct and enlight. ‘Flatland’ is a two-dimensional universe, inhabited by geometric characters. Our hero is a ‘Mr. Square,’ with [...]

I’m going to bite the bullet and start posting past work. It’s a daunting task because there is a lot of it. This one comes first because it was the easiest to grab.
The Venetian Courtesan gown has a heroic background similar both to the 1875 bustle gown and to the character who would have worn [...]

I wanted to post an 1885 photograph showing a group of tourists – including women with bustles – crossing the Mer de Glace. I don’t have a scanner, so I was hoping to find something like it online. But instead, I found this: a wonderful article on a team of intrepid climbers who chose to trace [...]

I decided to re-examine the back of the gown today. If there were a detachable train, I thought, there would need to be a method to attach it’s sides to the dress so the train didn’t fly up like a superman cape. Lo and behold, I found the method. There are a series of small [...]
